Woodcraft

“Wood, if you stop to think of it, has been man’s best friend in the world.
Wood is an incredible material. Each piece carries its own unique beauty, distinguishing it from the rest. Even pieces that may initially appear worthless or unattractive, such as an old piece of furniture, a discarded pallet, or a piece of builder’s scrap, can be repurposed and given a new life. These pieces, once overlooked and dismissed, can be transformed into something cherished and valued by someone.
The process of transforming a random piece of wood into something new and beautiful is a joy. There is something profoundly satisfying about the scent of freshly worked wood. Additionally, the application of stains and oils enhances the natural beauty of the wood’s grain, accentuating its patterns and details, and making it even more appealing.
Every single item showcased here is crafted from wood that was given a second chance. I have gathered wood from the Thames foreshore, dismantled pallets, scavenged in skips, and responded to numerous ads on marketplace platforms and Freecycle sites to find wood that was in need of rescuing.
All of these pieces are carved by hand in my tiny shed, using a variety of tools and techniques. When power tools are used they are controlled by hand; no CNC computer controlled machinery. Even if the same design is carved multiple times, in the same type of wood, no two carvings will be the same. There will be differences in the carving, the colouring and the wood grain, making every piece totally unique.
Creating these pieces brings me immense pleasure, and it is my hope that they will bring the same joy to you. Each piece is not only a demonstration of the inherent beauty of wood but also a testament to the potential for transformation and second chances.
